Alberta Shines with Western Magazine Awards Finalists

The Western Magazine Awards, celebrating their 30th year with 30 awards, have released a list of finalists and the Alberta talent certainly does shine.

We've posted a select list of the Alberta magazine finalists, but first we'd like to highlight a few specific AMPA member magazine accomplishments. Shortlisted for the Alberta/NWT Gold Award Best Article is David Ebner's "Oil Sands For Sale" in Alberta Views; Chris Turner's "Bearing Witness", Omar Mouallem's "Under the Veil", and Tim Bowling's "On the Rails" in Eighteen Bridges; and Jeremy Klaszus' "For the Love of God" in Swerve.

For the Alberta/NWT Magazine of the Year, we are proud to see three AMPA member magazines: Alberta Venture, celebrating their 15th year; Eighteen Bridges, 2011 recipient of the Alberta Magazine Award for Best New Magazine; and Swerve, the most recent addition to the AMPA member family.

Lastly, we're happy to see that three of the four magazines up for Best New Magazine are also Alberta-based publications: Eighteen Bridges, HERS and Leap.

National Magazine Awards Nominees Make Alberta Proud

The National Magazine Awards Foundation has released their 2011 shortlist of 362 nominees in 45 categories from 81 different Canadian magazines. Gold, Silver and Honourable Mention awards will be announced at the 35th National Magazine Awards on June 7 in Toronto.

AMPA is proud to see so many member magazines and friends representing our province's diverse talent. Eighteen Bridges (recipient of an Alberta Magazine Award for Best New Magazine) has an impressive ten nominations, including Omar Mouallem's "Under the Veil," recent winner of a Best Alberta Story award.

AlbertaViews and Swerve are also strong contenders, for awards in categories ranging from Essays and Investigative Reporting to Humour and Society. We're equally thrilled to see one of our newest members, Uppercase, receive a much-deserved nomination for Art Direction for an Entire Issue (go Janine go!).

Check out our Alberta talent in an AMPA-centric list of nominations...
